Christchurch Branch Lecture: Overcoming Challenges in the Pilot Training Industry

Lily Ayres is a modular pilot training student and Airworthiness Engineer who is passionate about increasing participating, engagement and diversity in the aviation industry. Lily is also a committee member of the RAeS Christchurch Branch.

This lecture looks at the highlights and hurdles of training to become a pilot in the UK. It addresses some of the key challenges that you might face and how you can find ways to overcome them, including finding sources of funding. It also looks at some of the myths and misconceptions around pilot training.

RAeS Lanchester Named Lecture 2023: Advances in Unsteady Computational Aerodynamics with Separation

There are many complex aeronautical systems where aerodynamics play a key role, such as rotating systems and aeroelasticity of lifting surfaces. Significant progress in the understanding and solution of these aerodynamic problems via computational methods have been achieved.

Joined by Professor Marilyn Smith, this lecture highlights several significant understanding and predictive capabilities that have been attained in the past two decades for unsteady aerodynamics that involve dynamic interactions with separated flows. As well as the technical accomplishments, insights into the lessons learned and best practices will be discussed, along with current and future endeavors in the field.

How Women Can Change the Future of the Aviation Industry

Adva is a woman in a male dominated workforce- aviation. She took to the stage to share how women can pursue their dreams of flight, even the working field, and save an industry in the process. Adva is a commercial pilot and flight instructor conducting flight training for beginner through advanced ratings currently located in Florida. She serves as the Public Relations Coordinator of The Professional Pilot Leadership Initiative (PPLI)of the 99s organization for women pilots that inspires and mentor them at the beginning of their flight careers.

Adva served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as a Civil Coordination Lieutenant Officer between the Israeli Government and the Palestinian Authority. She managed major events with political and security significance. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

Women in Aviation - Inspiring the Next Generation

Currently, approximately 3.5% of all airline pilots are female. At L3Harris we want to encourage more women to follow a pilot career. Currently females make up 5% of our students. We’re working to improve that.

Women in Aerospace

In an industry where women comprise just 11% of the workforce, aerospace has long faced challenges in gender diversity. At Venus, we are committed to driving change. Led by our CEO & Co-Founder, Sassie Duggleby, a trailblazing woman in STEM, we are dedicated to fostering development, representation, and empowerment for women in this field. Together, let’s break barriers and pave the way for a more inclusive future in aerospace.

Mentoring Event The Power of Mentoring

This presentation is aimed at female members of the Royal Air Force who are interested in finding out more about mentoring and how the alta mentoring platform can help those looking for a mentor from outside of the Royal Air Force. The session will begin with a discussion of ‘mentoring’, specifically its meaning and benefits, as well as identifying the potential barriers to mentoring.

Interview with Ariane Saint Pierre, Ascendance Flight Technologies

Acuity is delighted to share the latest episode in our podcast series, Formidable Females in Future Flight. Acuity partner, Jo Moses is joined by Ariane Saint Pierre, Hybrid Project Lead at Ascendance Flight Technologies, a future flight business located in France. Ariane describes how a love of science guided her towards this career, though following this path has felt counter-intuitive at times, Ariane pursued her dreams and today finds herself in a truly pioneering business that combines her passion for engineering and the environment. She described the open-minded culture that exists here, it remains a challenge to find an equal number of female engineers, but the inclusive mindset embedded throughout this business enables everyone to feel at home.

Formidable Females In Future Flight with Mandy Nelson

I’m pleased to share the latest episode of my podcast series, Formidable Females in Future Flight!

Please tune in to hear from Mandy Nelson, Director, Business Development, Advanced Air Mobility at Bristow Group. Mandy shares how following her dream to travel led directly to her being inspired by the incredible aviation and aerospace ecosystem in Alaska. She trained as a Pilot before transitioning into a commercial career with Bristow Group. Here Mandy works with many of the world’s leading future flight pioneers, utilizing Bristow’s seven decades of experience in Vertical Lift operations to bring new technologies safely to our skies. Thank you for sharing your incredible story Mandy Nelson. Congratulations also for being named in eVTOL Insights Power Book 2024!

Formidable Females in Future Flight - Early Inspiration

One topic that features throughout my podcast series is the importance of early inspiration.

This seems to be especially relevant for women in male-dominant environments – often something has captured their imagination as a young child:

✈ Julie Garland at Avtrain was inspired by her Granddad taking her in a flight simulator
✈ Verity Richardson at Vertical Aerospace was inspired by her Uncle who flew with British Airways
✈ Andrea Cornell from McKinsey & Company was taken to see aircraft taking off and landing by a family friend
✈ Kirsty Boyd from Vertical Aerospace and Meagan Villanueva from Otto Aviation grew up nearby to some of the world’s largest military airbases – they were fascinated by what they saw every day.

Formidable Females In Future Flight with Marta Martinez-Montoro

I’m pleased to share the latest episode of my podcast series, Formidable Females in Future Flight!

Here I meet with Marta Martinez-Montoro, recently promoted to Head of Certification and Airworthiness Vertical Aerospace. Congratulations on your promotion!!

Marta shares her story from her original dreams of becoming an astronaut, through to the fine balance of technical and communication skills needed to be a great engineering leader. She describes the incredible support network around her, both in work and at home, and shares useful insights for anyone with complex logistics to balance.

Marta is currently hiring across roles in structures, electrical, and propulsion systems at Vertical, please do tune in to hear about the great opportunities available.

I hope that everyone can take inspiration from Marta’s incredible achievements.
